Principal’s Note: It is a busy time for teachers as we work on our end-of-year standardized assessments. The information gathered pushes us to ask questions about our work. For example, we will study growth information about individual children, we will analyze our reading and writing programs across classrooms and vertically across the school, and we will use the data to help us plan resource allocation and a way to develop solid future plans. That said, the end of the year offers a special time for us all to connect and appreciate the work we’ve embarked on as school as well. Take a minute to reflect with your child on this important year of accomplishments! Have a wonderful week! First of all, class lists will initially be compiled by the current grade level teachers without the assignment of specific classroom teacher names. Other teachers, including EAL, Learning Support, Additional Language and Single Subject teachers are also able to provide input about the proposed groupings. The work is undertaken with a close eye on developing classes balanced in terms of gender, special student learning needs, English language development, nationality, learner traits, and relationships. From there, the ES Principal will work with our school counselors to place a teacher with each class group in early August (once all of our new students have been admitted.) It is important to note that parent requests to place students in the classroom of a specific teacher will not be honoured. However, consideration will be given to requests from parents to not have their child placed in a specific classroom due to past personal experience. (Personal experience would mean that another sibling in the same family was previously in the teacher’s classroom and the experience was not a positive one.) If your family is in this situation, please contact me via email ([email protected]) by Friday, May 26, 2017, noting the name of the teacher and the name of the child that was in the teacher’s classroom in the past. I want to share some information about the new literacy assessment we will be using to assess reading in the elementary school this year. The Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System, Third Edition is a one-on-one assessment that helps us identify your child’s specific reading strengths and appropriate instructional reading level for small-group instruction as determined by the F&P Text Level Gradient™. The data gained from this standardized assessment helps us identify goals and plan instruction that supports your child’s reading progress. Within each level are easier and harder books, and a range of topics and book types. The text levels are not intended for students or for families to categorize readers, but in the hands of teachers, they inform instruction. The Benchmark Assessment System provides a snapshot in time of your child’s literacy development and will be given across the ES from May to 8-23, 2017. (Your child’s teacher will provide more exact dates on classroom blogs.) Because this is a new assessment for our school community, we have designed a testing protocol which allows multiple teachers to administer the assessment across the school. This method ensures the assessment is delivered with fidelity across the grades, and provides the teachers an opportunity, to discuss what we are learning as we launch into a new tool. In all, each grade level will have 6-10 testers, including myself, over the next few weeks. The test is very similar to the DRA2 assessment used in the Fall. However, this new kit provides a more detailed look at student comprehension, which is often the area we need to focus our instruction around. (Students can sometimes read the words, but do not adequately understand what they read. Reading is understanding.) It is important to note, your child already experiences a wide variety of book levels across the day in read-aloud, shared reading, book clubs, and independent reading. When selecting books for enjoyment, your child should be selecting from a wide range of books that appeal to his/her interests; not only selected based on reading level. By the end of May, teachers will be communicating the areas of focus for your reader. (We will also ensure next-year’s teacher has this information to begin the year with). In the meantime, here are some of the best ways you can support your child’s literacy learning at home:
We are excited about this new assessment and the information it will provide us as we work to best serve our readers at ASW. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. Warmly, Jen Munnerlyn [email protected] Important Upcoming Dates to Note: (more detailed information below)

We will be utilizing Mr. Thompson’s feedback to help ensure the work we do on our curriculum and unit design helps us march toward full accreditation in the Fall of 2019. I’m writing this message from Bucharest, Romania where I’m attending an amazing PYP PE workshop with our ES PE staff. It has been a worthwhile learning event for us all. We are excited to return to work to share with our colleagues and the students on Tuesday. As always, my office is open. Please don’t hesitate to stop in if I can be of service.
