Principal’s Note:

It is a busy time for teachers as we work on our end-of-year standardized assessments. The information gathered pushes us to ask questions about our work. For example, we will study growth information about individual children, we will analyze our reading and writing programs across classrooms and vertically across the school, and we will use the data to help us plan resource allocation and a way to develop solid future plans.

That said, the end of the year offers a special time for us all to connect and appreciate the work we’ve embarked on as school as well. Take a minute to reflect with your child on this important year of accomplishments!

Have a wonderful week!
Warmly,
Jen

MAP- Measures of Academic Progress Testing- Grades 3-5- May 15-19, 2017
During this week, we will be conducting the MAP test in the Elementary School. This test is a standardized test students in Grades 3-5 take on a computer. It is also an “adaptive test” meaning the questions change based on how the child answers them. A few important items to note:
  • The test is a snapshot in time. Over time, and after multiple tests, the results are interesting because they show the learning progress of a student in Reading and Mathematics.
  • The MAP test is not used as a grade or to determine class placement. Instead, we compare the test result with what we already know about the learner. If there are inconsistencies, the teachers, together with our Literacy and Math coaches will dig deeper into the data.
  • Students and teachers do not “prep” for the test. It is instead a moment when we survey where students are, in order to compare that information with our own, essential, classroom data.
  • The MAP Results will be distributed with Report Cards. Students in Grades 4-10, who have taken the MAP Test at ASW, will have the benefit of seeing multiple years of data in the handout provided with Report Cards in June.
  • If you have questions about the MAP test, please contact your child’s teacher; Jen Munnerlyn, ES Principal; or Carol Jordan Director, of Teaching and Learning.
  • More information can be found at the NWEA site: https://www.nwea.org/assessments/map/

Placing students in their classrooms for our next school year is a multi-step process designed to ensure the development of balanced classes which meet the needs of all students.

First of all, class lists will initially be compiled by the current grade level teachers without the assignment of specific classroom teacher names. Other teachers, including EAL, Learning Support, Additional Language and Single Subject teachers are also able to provide input about the proposed groupings. The work is undertaken with a close eye on developing classes balanced in terms of gender, special student learning needs, English language development, nationality, learner traits, and relationships.
From there, the ES Principal will work with our school counselors to place a teacher with each class group in early August (once all of our new students have been admitted.)

It is important to note that parent requests to place students in the classroom of a specific teacher will not be honoured. However, consideration will be given to requests from parents to not have their child placed in a specific classroom due to past personal experience. (Personal experience would mean that another sibling in the same family was previously in the teacher’s classroom and the experience was not a positive one.)

If your family is in this situation, please contact me via email ([email protected]) by Friday, May 26, 2017, noting the name of the teacher and the name of the child that was in the teacher’s classroom in the past. Please be assured that any communication will be handled in a confidential manner.

Plastic Bottle Collection - A Project from our friends in 9th Grade!

The 9th grade class is currently working on it's service learning project aimed at connecting maths and spreading the awareness about smog and air quality in Warsaw. We have a group of students, who would like to stress the importance of trees in maintaining the proper air quality. They would like to run a plastic bottles collection, to exchange them later for the small trees, that could be planted by 9th graders, or be distributed among ASW community. Please bring your empty plastic bottles to the bins marked in front of the ES Office (and under the ‘I AM’ display!

(Questions: Please contact our Service Learning Assistant Marcin Kowalski ([email protected])

A Note from the ES Art Studios

Many families are interested in providing their students with experiences in art making outside of the school day.

We would like to compile a list of all local studios, classes, and artists/private instructors for families and their children.

If you know of a private instructor, artist, art studio, or local arts classes please consider sharing this information with us and the greater ASW community by completing this (linked) form .

Thank you!
