A very Important Note from The Nurse’s Office
Dear Parents,
One of our students in the Elementary School was diagnosed with Viral Meningitis. The child has been treated and is recovering but this information is being shared to raise awareness and understanding of the illness.

Viral meningitis is the most common type of meningitis, an inflammation of the tissue that covers the brain and spinal cord.
The most common cause of viral meningitis are Enteroviruses which are most often spread through direct contact with the respiratory secretions of an infected person however; you are not likely to develop meningitis because only a small number of people who get infected with the viruses that cause meningitis will actually develop viral meningitis.
You can get viral meningitis at any age. However children younger than 5 years old, and people with weakened immune systems caused by diseases, medications (such as chemotherapy), and recent organ or bone marrow transplantations have a higher risk of getting the disease. Babies younger than 1 month old and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have severe illness.

The most common symptoms in adults are fever, headache, stiff neck and sensitivity to bright lights, sleepiness or trouble waking up from sleep, nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, lethargy (lack of energy) and irritability. In babies the symptoms are difficult to identify but may include fever, fretfulness or irritability, difficulty awakening and refusing to eat.

In most cases, there is no specific treatment for viral meningitis. Most people who get viral meningitis completely recover on their own within 7 to 10 days. People with meningitis caused by certain viruses such as herpes virus and influenza, will usually need and get better from treatment such as an antiviral medications. Antibiotics do not help viral infections, so they are not useful in the treatment of viral meningitis.

Prevention:
·    The most effective method of prevention is to wash hands often and thoroughly with soap and water, especially after changing diapers, using the toilet, or coughing or blowing your nose.
·      Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.
·     Avoid close contact such as kissing, hugging, or sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick.
·    Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your upper shirt sleeve, not your hands.
·    Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.
·      Stay home when you are sick.
·    Do not send your child to school if he/she is sick or has a temperature of 38 degrees Centigrade.

There is no vaccination against Viral Meningitis however some vaccinations can protect against diseases that can lead to viral meningitis such as measles, mumps, chickenpox, and influenza. Make sure you and your child are vaccinated on schedule.
It is very important to see your doctor right away if you think you or your child might have meningitis. As always, you can call the school nurses @ (22) 702 85 37, if you have any health related questions or concerns.
Thank you for your attention to this health notice.

Respectfully,
Marilyn Dypczynski RN

Dear Parents,
It was wonderful to see our students this morning! We are eager to get back to the work of learning after these past days cleaning up from the cafeteria fire. Here is what ES Parents need to know about our lunch service for the next 10 days:

  • All lunches will be served in the Elementary Gym.
  • Our lunch schedule will NOT change.
  • Students may bring their lunch from home. Please note: there are no microwaves to use.
  • We will serve a modified lunch menu: 3 Choices: A, B, C1/C2 (soup)
  • Kindergarten-Grade 2 lunches will NOT be set out ahead of time, however children can still order school lunch and will go through the line to pick up their food. (With teacher assistance of course.)
  • PK lunch will continue to be delivered to their classrooms.
  • No morning coffee service until further notice.
  • Normal cashier system will be in operation.

In addition, beginning this afternoon, we ask that you determine the days your child will eat school lunch and communicate your choice to your homeroom teacher the afternoon before. That information will be delivered to the cafeteria allowing them to estimate the cooking needs for the following day.

Warmly,
Jen Munnerlyn

Watching for Anxiety in Children Following an Emergency:

We are aware that students will react in different ways to emergencies of this nature, so it will be important to have support available to them as needed. Counselors are available in the school setting to assist students as they express their feelings related to the fire. We have included an article link (see below) to help you recognize possible anxiety reactions you may observe in your child and ways forward to talk to them.  If you feel your child is in need of special assistance or is having a great deal of difficulty coping with the fire in any way, please do not hesitate to reach out.
