Principal’s Note: Last week we enjoyed several assemblies in the Elementary School. Thank you to parents, teachers and especially students for a successful launch of our “Spotlight On!” assemblies this year. All classes- Kindergarten to Grade 5- were in the Spotlight twice. As a bonus, we had Pre-Kindergarten join in on Friday. I am amazed at the growth we’ve seen this year! Well done, all. Please note this busy week ends with our Elementary Field Day on Friday. Students need to come to school in clothes they run and play in! Of course our plan is for this good weather to continue… fingers crossed! As some families plan to leave early for the summer break, please remember that report cards are distributed on the last day of school. If you are leaving ASW, and leave school before the final day (June 21) we will send you a PDF of the final report card. If you are choosing to leave early and will return next year, you can pick up the report card from the ES Office in August. Finally, ASW is piloting a new ENotes format with all ENotes- from every division- sent out on Wednesdays. Please be on the lookout for this new communication this week. As I send out my info on Mondays, it will be duplicate for the next few weeks, with a fresh start and a consistent emailing of ENotes on Wednesdays only for the 2017-18 school year. Have a wonderful week! Warmly, Jen Jen Munnerlyn ES Principal (esoffice@aswarsaw.org) Important Upcoming Dates to Note: (more detailed information below)

Principal’s Note: It is a busy time for teachers as we work on our end-of-year standardized assessments. The information gathered pushes us to ask questions about our work. For example, we will study growth information about individual children, we will analyze our reading and writing programs across classrooms and vertically across the school, and we will use the data to help us plan resource allocation and a way to develop solid future plans. That said, the end of the year offers a special time for us all to connect and appreciate the work we’ve embarked on as school as well. Take a minute to reflect with your child on this important year of accomplishments! Have a wonderful week! MAP- Measures of Academic Progress Testing- Grades 3-5- May 15-19, 2017 During this week, we will be conducting the MAP test in the Elementary School. This test is a standardized test students in Grades 3-5 take on a computer. It is also an “adaptive test” meaning the questions change based on how the child answers them. A few important items to note:
2017-18 Class Placement Process As happens every year, we will have teachers leaving for other opportunities and pursuits and new teachers joining our staff. Departing Faculty we will miss! First of all, class lists will initially be compiled by the current grade level teachers without the assignment of specific classroom teacher names. Other teachers, including EAL, Learning Support, Additional Language and Single Subject teachers are also able to provide input about the proposed groupings. The work is undertaken with a close eye on developing classes balanced in terms of gender, special student learning needs, English language development, nationality, learner traits, and relationships. From there, the ES Principal will work with our school counselors to place a teacher with each class group in early August (once all of our new students have been admitted.) It is important to note that parent requests to place students in the classroom of a specific teacher will not be honoured. However, consideration will be given to requests from parents to not have their child placed in a specific classroom due to past personal experience. (Personal experience would mean that another sibling in the same family was previously in the teacher’s classroom and the experience was not a positive one.) If your family is in this situation, please contact me via email (jmunnerlyn@aswarsaw.org) by Friday, May 26, 2017, noting the name of the teacher and the name of the child that was in the teacher’s classroom in the past. Please be assured that any communication will be handled in a confidential manner. (Questions? Please contact ES Principal Jen Munnerlyn (jmunnerlyn@aswarsaw.org) ASW “Project Nest” !

As you’ve heard, a varied group from across the school worked with our consultant Ewan McIntosh of NoTosh to begin gathering our stories around “What is ASW all about?” This information is collected and displayed for all to read, question, and curate in the ASW “Project Nest”. Over the next several weeks, these stories will be used to create a set of Core Values for our school.
