It is a week of celebrations at ASW. Following on the heels of the beautiful Studniowka Dance, held to honor our 12th Graders, the elementary school is preparing for our 1st Carnival parade. Students and teachers have been inquiring into the history of Carnival in Poland and around the world. Our small celebration, will help us connect to where we live. The parade will begin at 09:00 on Friday, Jan. 27. Please remember to send your child in costume.
I look forward to seeing man of you on Saturday evening at the PTO Quiz Night.

21st Century Learning
Wednesday, January 25- 08:45 to 09:45 in the MPR
We hear about 21st Century Learning and the skills our children need as learners, both now and in the future. What does 21st Century Learning look like and how do we use technology at ASW elementary school to ensure our students are developing the life, learning, and literacy skills necessary to be successful in this connected and information-rich era. In this session, we will discuss 21st Century Learning and share the process of thought and collaboration that teachers go through to ensure technology is being used effectively. We will then have hands-on time to experiment with some of the tools our students are using in the classroom.

ES Carnival Parade!: Friday, Jan. 27 (09:00- ES Parade)
The Elementary School will be celebrating “Carnival” on Friday, January 27. We are excited to offer an event which highlights our host country of Poland, while offering us an opportunity to have fun learning about other countries and their celebrations too!
The Polish Culture and Language teachers, together with our homeroom teachers, will be helping students inquire into this traditional celebration and how it is presented around the world. Here in Poland, Carnival is typically celebrated prior to Ash Wednesday. People wear costumes and eat traditional donuts called Pączki.
On Friday, Jan. 27, students should come to school already in their costumes. As a group, we will parade through the school hallways from 09:00-09:30. (Parents are welcome to participate as our audience!) Following that, Homeroom Parents will be providing a sweet Pączki treat for each classroom.

Math Kangaroo- An International Math Contest (Grades 1-5)
There is an international math competition called Math Kangaroo. This competition was first started in the 1980s and now has over 5,000,000 participants worldwide. Math Kangaroo is a challenging math test that is open to children across the grades. This will be the first time the American School of Warsaw participates!
This is an optional event/test that will take place during school hours. If you are interested in your child participating in this test, please read this entire letter.
The Math Kangaroo test will take place during school hours on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at ASW. Students from grades 1 - 5 can participate. This test is multiple choice and will be in English. The questions have been developed by a small committee who create questions that are challenging and require logical, out-of-the box thinking. The Polish organisers of this event will give each participant a certificate and a small math prize. Also, ASW will offer each participant a Math Kangaroo t-shirt for a small fee.
More information will come home with your child this week.

IF you would like to use an electronic version of a photo instead of the one taken here at ASW for the yearbook, please use this form to submit that photo.

PTO Quiz Night
This years event will be held in Stixx, who describe themselves as “a high-energy, bustling bar, restaurant and lounge destination where you will feel like a VIP in an energetic, stylish world all to yourself”. We will have sole occupancy of their Terrace which is +/- 300 SqM which has its own fully stocked bar.
For a number of reasons we need to charge a nominal fee, 10pln per person in advance or 15pln on the night – tickets will be available to purchase from the PTO Shop from Tuesday 17 Jan, during the Shop regular opening hours. They will also be available to purchase on the night.
Our working plan is for people to arrive between 8 & 9pm with finger food being offered at this time. Then between 9 & 10, the quiz. Then from 10 onwards there will be a live DJ to take us to home time.
In terms of the tone of the questions, many will be multiple choice and they will be quite general along the lines of ‘how many bullets does it take to fill the Albert Hall’ as opposed to ‘who was the first man on the moon’.
Stixx are providing us with drink specials all night;
Żywiec Draft Beer 0,5l 10,-zł ,
SPIER – South Africa wine, red or white 10,-zł per glass
Screwdriver cocktail 15,-zł
Cuba Libre 15,-zł
Gin & Tonic 15,-zł.
It should be an electric evening !
