Parent Partnership Meeting: ES Tech Coaches 21st Century Learning Wednesday, January 25- 08:45 to 09:45 in the MPR We hear about 21st Century Learning and the skills our children need as learners, both now and in the future. What does 21st Century Learning look like and how do we use technology at ASW elementary school to ensure our students are developing the life, learning, and literacy skills necessary to be successful in this connected and information-rich era. In this session, we will discuss 21st Century Learning and share the process of thought and collaboration that teachers go through to ensure technology is being used effectively. We will then have hands-on time to experiment with some of the tools our students are using in the classroom. (Questions? Please contact the ES Tech Coaches: Kris Sheehan and Simon May at [email protected] and [email protected]) Grade 5 Book Swap It’s that time of year again! Join us in recycling used books and more. You can also purchase books or games at the Book Swap for 5 PLN each. Fifth grade students will be coming around to your classes to collect books and distribute tickets. Please note: the used books must be in good condition with no writing inside and no torn or missing pages; our diligent book inspectors will ensure all books are up to standard. We are excited to offer an event which highlights our host country of Poland, while offering us an opportunity to have fun learning about other countries and their celebrations too! The Polish Culture and Language teachers, together with our homeroom teachers, will be helping students inquire into this traditional celebration and how it is presented around the world. Here in Poland, Carnival is typically celebrated prior to Ash Wednesday. People wear costumes and eat traditional donuts called Pączki. On Friday, Jan. 27, students should come to school already in their costumes. As a group, we will parade through the school hallways from 09:00-09:30. (Parents are welcome to participate as our audience!) Following that, Homeroom Parents will be providing a sweet Pączki treat for each classroom. (Questions? Please contact your child’s teacher.) Math Kangaroo- An International Math Contest (Grades 1-5) There is an international math competition called Math Kangaroo. This competition was first started in the 1980s and now has over 5,000,000 participants worldwide. Math Kangaroo is a challenging math test that is open to children across the grades. This will be the first time the American School of Warsaw participates! This is an optional event/test that will take place during school hours. If you are interested in your child participating in this test, please read this entire letter. The Math Kangaroo test will take place during school hours on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at ASW. Students from grades 1 - 5 can participate. This test is multiple choice and will be in English. The questions have been developed by a small committee who create questions that are challenging and require logical, out-of-the box thinking. The Polish organisers of this event will give each participant a certificate and a small math prize. Also, ASW will offer each participant a Math Kangaroo t-shirt for a small fee. More information will come home with your child this week. (Questions? Contact our ES Math Coach Ann-Marie Cetlinska: [email protected] ) Library Update We are happy to report that the library cleaning is almost completed. Everything (including books, carpets, furniture, computers, walls and ventilation system) has been cleaned and the ceiling tiles replaced. We are hoping to open the library mid-week if everything goes as expected. Thank you to everyone for your understanding and flexibility while the library has been closed. (Questions? Contact our ES Librarian Miriam James: [email protected]) Yearbook Update/Clarification: Photos and Names The Yearbook Staff is working on our yearly publication. This student publishing group wants the Yearbook to be as accurate as possible. IF you would like your child's name presented differently than how we refer to them in school, please complete this name verification form. (Teachers will check Yearbook names and nationalities to verify they are accurate before publishing.) IF you would like to use an electronic version of a photo instead of the one taken here at ASW for the yearbook, please use this form to submit that photo. All forms will be closed on March 1. (Questions? Contact HS Design Technology Teacher Mr. Miele: [email protected]) Rock’n’Rota The first Rock’n’Rota of 2017 will take place on Friday, January 27 at 6:30 PM in the ASW Theater.
